Did You Know?...

...that pornography consumption can be as mood altering and as addictive as narcotics? (Richard Drake, assistant professor at Brigham Young University College of Nursing) In fact, some studies have indicated that pornography can have the same effect on the brain as cocaine. Images can be permanently "burned" into the memory by epinephrine, a chemical in the brain.

...that according to Nielson NetRatings, 17.5 million people visited porn sites in January 2000? (U.S. News & World Report, 3/27/2000)

...that there are more outlets for hard-core pornography in this country than there are McDonalds restaurants?

...that rape statistics are proportionately higher in those states with higher pornography sales and lower in those states with lower pornography sales?

...that cyberporn sales - including videos and accessories ordered online - accounted for 8% of 1999's $18 billion E-commerce pie? (U.S. News & World Report, 3/27/2000) That's nearly $5.25 for every man, woman, and child in the United States!

...that boys ages 12-17 are one of the largest consumers of pornography and pornographers target them for that reason? If the pornographers can arrange for the young person to become addicted, then a steady flow of income is assured.

Why the emphasis on traveling people?

Exact numbers are difficult to pin down, but there are millions of professional truck and bus drivers in America—drivers that spend days and weeks away from their families. Unknown numbers of people travel in other occupations. Those people are inundated with temptations of every kind every day. One of the greatest temptations for them is sexually immoral activity.

man by bus montageTraveling workers are young, older, male, female, and of every nationality. Some are Christian. Many are not. Whether they are professing Christians or not, they face difficulties that can bring them to their knees— difficulties such as problems within the marriage or just the stress of the job. The man of the house might spend days or weeks on the road, leaving the wife to be both mother and father to the children. Stress builds up. Phone calls home end in arguments and anger.

Where does the man turn when this happens? Often, he retreats into a stack of pornographic material, stops by the nearest strip joint, or accepts an offer from whatever prostitute happens to be working the truckstop on that day. He may settle down in his hotel room and spend the evening with an illicit pay-for-view movie.

This doesn’t have to be! Man On The Road hopes to make a difference in the lives of thousands of men whose families, finances, and spiritual relationships have been destroyed by the invasion of pornography and other forms of sexual impropriety.

Reaching husbands and fathers across the USA

Men who travel for extended periods of time, are especially vulnerable to the pitfalls of sexual immorality, including pornography addiction. Some of those reasons are:

  • Constantly being alone. Not the same as loneliness. The hidden idea that there is no one around to hold them accountable can contribute to behavior that they would never knowingly show at home. They often believe the old saying, “What she don’t know, won’t hurt her.”

  • Loneliness. Although there are increasing numbers of female drivers, most are men. Men were created by God to need physical companionship. Men are easy targets because they are visually oriented. In their search for momentary companionship, they are often led by the “lust of the eye.”

  • Tiredness. Men are more susceptible to the pull of pornography when they are tired. Pornography helps them to relax, they think. To a certain extent, that is true because of the neuro-chemical responses that take place in the brain and other parts of the body.

  • Stress. In addition to the stress of their jobs, truckers often experience great stress because of problems within the marriage, or with children at home. Men often turn to pornography for relief from that stress.

  • Targeted marketing. Truckers are being marketed to by roadside pornographers and strip show operators via billboards promising “Truck parking!”

Our emphasis is on people who travel for a living, but especially drivers, because we have been there! Through personal experience and counseling others, we know the incredible damage that can be done to families when the dark side of living on the road takes over a driver. We will do whatever we can to stop that damage before it has a chance to happen.
